Packing Clothing Stocklots for Shipment
The direct answer: packing is the largest controllable variable in freight cost and the largest controllable variable in damage. Folding methods, carton fill and weight limits change both the per-unit freight charge and the percentage of garments that arrive damaged.
Part of the buyer journey: Pay, Ship and Clear Customs Without Surprises — stage 3 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.
Folding and carton fill
Garments are folded by category and size in normal practice, and the folding method affects both cube and appearance on arrival. Knitwear packed compressed can arrive with lasting creases or, if compression is excessive, damaged fibres.
Cartons should be filled without gaps, because air in a carton is freight paid for and movement in transit is what causes crushing. Loose packing is the most common avoidable source of both cost and damage.
Weights and handling
Heavy cartons are handled badly. Manual handling has safe weight limits and exceeding them produces damage that is not the carrier’s fault in practice, however the paperwork reads.
Keep cartons within a sensible weight, distribute evenly across the pallet, and have the carton markings clear and accurate so handling and inspection both go smoothly.
Cube and container stuffing
Sea freight is charged substantially on volume, so the cube per garment determines the cost per unit. Ask about carton dimensions and whether the lot can be compressed safely or consolidated.
Check how the container is stuffed before it is sealed. Goods packed evenly across the floor arrive in better condition than goods stacked at the door and shipped around, which is a surprisingly common and very visible outcome.

Buyer questions, answered
What carton size works best for garments?
One that fills naturally from the folding method and stays within a sensible weight. The right answer depends on the garment category and the freight mode, so ask your supplier and your forwarder rather than fixing it in advance.
Is compression packing safe?
Within agreed limits, yes, and it can meaningfully reduce freight cost. Beyond those limits it damages fibres and leaves creases that do not come out. Agree the limits in writing and check a sample before the lot is packed.
How does packing affect customs clearance?
Accurate carton marks, correct counts and consistent descriptions between the packing list and the cartons make clearance straightforward. Discrepancies between documents and physical goods are the most common cause of holds.
