Sea Freight for Clothing Stocklots: When It Makes Sense
The direct answer: sea freight wins on cost per unit and loses on time. It makes sense when the quantity justifies a full container, when the category is not seasonal enough to punish a delay, and when you have the cash to wait through the whole cycle.
Part of the buyer journey: Pay, Ship and Clear Customs Without Surprises — stage 3 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.
Full container versus less than container
A full container gives the best cost per unit and the most control over how the goods are packed, because the stuffing plan is yours. Less-than-container loads consolidate your cartons with other buyers, which is cheaper than a full container you cannot fill and more expensive than a full one you can.
For a buyer whose quantity sits between the two, LCL is the practical answer, and consolidation is a service worth paying for because the fixed costs are spread across more units.
Packing density is worth as much as the rate
Ocean freight is charged on volume as well as weight, and garments are light and bulky, so cube is usually the limiting factor. Well-compressed, fully filled cartons move more garments per container than loosely packed ones.
Ask about carton dimensions and compression. A supplier who will vacuum-pack or compress a lot within safe limits is saving you real money, and the risk is low if it is agreed in advance and checked before loading.
The costs that are easy to forget
Destination charges, documentation fees, insurance, and demurrage if the shipment is not collected promptly. Demurrage and detention are charged per day per container and are entirely avoidable with planning.
Also include the cost of your time: a sea shipment involves more parties and more things that can go wrong, and that has a real cost even when the freight invoice looks cheap.

Buyer questions, answered
How long does sea freight from Pakistan take?
It varies by destination and routing, and every forwarder will give you a current estimate rather than a fixed figure. Plan with a generous buffer and build in the contingency that shipping schedules slip, because they do.
Should I use a full container or an LCL for a first shipment?
An LCL if the quantity does not fill a container comfortably, because the alternative is paying for space you will not use. Once your quantities reliably fill a container, switch, and the saving per unit is substantial.
How is clothing freight priced?
Ocean freight is generally charged on volume or in twenty-foot equivalent units, sometimes with a weight component. Air freight is charged by weight or by volumetric weight, whichever is greater, and garments are often charged on the volumetric figure.
