What Does a Clothing Pallet Actually Contain? Manifests, Grades and Mixes

A manifested clothing pallet lists counts and categories in writing; an unmanifested one is a guess dressed as a bargain. What is inside varies by source — cancelled orders arrive mostly new in one size run, end-of-season stock arrives mixed and graded, returns arrive in the widest condition range — and the grade letter on the bale is the seller promising which end of that range you are getting.

Part of the buyer journey: Understanding Stocklots: The Model From the Inside — stage 1 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

Where the stock on a pallet comes from

Four sources feed the pallet trade: overproduction (factories made more than the order), cancelled orders (the buyer walked, the goods are finished and new), end-of-season clearances (retailers clearing racks), and customer returns (the mixed-condition category). Each source has a different condition profile, which is why two pallets at the same price can be completely different businesses. Knowing the source is worth more than knowing the price.

What do grade A, B and C mean on clothing?

Grade A: near-new, sellable at full resale with no work. Grade B: light wear or marking, sellable after sorting or at discount. Grade C: heavy wear, damage or missing items — sold to recyclers and rag merchants, not to shoppers. Mixed grades bundle those shares together at a lower price. None of these letters is regulated, which is why your supplier matters more than the alphabet: a good warehouse grades honestly because repeat buyers are the business; a bad one prints A on everything.

The five questions that expose a bad pallet seller

Ask: What is the source of this stock? Do you have a manifest, and will you send it before payment? What is your grade definition — will you state it in writing? What happens on dispute — replacement, credit, or nothing? Who is the registered company behind this warehouse? Honest sellers answer in minutes because these are normal trade questions. Evasion on any of them is the answer.

Buyer questions, answered

How many items are in a clothing pallet?

Anywhere from dozens to hundreds depending on the category and how the pallet was built — which is why the manifest, not the item count, is what you buy. Heavy items like jeans mean lower counts; kidswear means higher counts.

Is manifested stock more expensive?

Usually slightly — you are paying for transparency, which is the cheapest insurance in this trade. Unmanifested loads should always be priced at the pessimistic band precisely because nobody will tell you what is inside.

Can I choose the sizes in a pallet?

Generally no for returns and mixed loads, sometimes for cancelled-order stock where the size run is intact. Size guarantees are a feature of proper wholesale, not of the pallet trade — another reason new surplus beats returns for shops.
