Third-Party Inspection for Garment Stocklots: How It Works

Third-party pre-shipment inspection is the cheapest insurance in the stocklot trade: an independent agency in Karachi verifies the goods against your agreed specification, counts cartons and photographs loading, for a few hundred dollars — a fraction of one mis-bought container.

Part of the buyer journey: Find & Verify a Supplier Before Money Moves — stage 2 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.

Who does the inspection

The major agencies — SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek — all operate in Karachi and Lahore and run garment inspections as routine work. You book directly with the agency (they report to you, not the seller), agree the inspection criteria, and receive a report with photographs before the container is sealed.

What the inspector actually checks

Against the specification you agreed with the seller: carton count and condition, quantity per the packing list, sample pulls for style and composition match, size and colour distribution, workmanship on pulled samples, labelling situation, and the loading process itself — photographed carton by carton.

The output is a written report with photos, typically within a day or two of the visit. A “pass” means the goods matched the agreed description; a “fail” documents exactly where they did not.

What it costs and how to book it

Inspection pricing in Pakistan is typically in the low hundreds of dollars for a standard single-day garment inspection, varying with agency, scope and location. The seller arranges warehouse access and packed goods; you choose the agency and receive the report directly.

For smaller lots where a full inspection is disproportionate, a live video inspection of the goods at pack-out — you directing, the seller walking the cartons — is a reasonable minimum.

Fitting inspection into payment

The cleanest structure: deposit on order, inspection booked for the pack-out date, balance released against shipping documents once the report passes. A supplier who resists this sequence — or claims inspection is “impossible” at their location — is telling you something more important than any inspection would.
