Paying a Pakistani Supplier Safely
The direct answer: structure the payment so the largest portion is released only after the goods exist and have been verified. A deposit you can lose, a balance tied to inspection or a shipping document, and independently verified account details together remove almost all of the avoidable risk in this trade.
Part of the buyer journey: Pay, Ship and Clear Customs Without Surprises — stage 3 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.
The milestone structure
A deposit on order confirms the lot and covers the seller’s commitment. The balance should be tied to something verifiable — an inspection report, a passed third-party inspection, or a signed shipping document.
If the balance is tied to loading rather than inspection, make sure the inspection happens before loading and is written into the terms. An inspection after the container is sealed has very little practical value.
Verifying the account
The account name must match the registered company name exactly. Confirm it by calling a number you already had, not one supplied in the message requesting payment. A genuine supplier accepts this without friction.
Assume a change in payment details is suspicious until verified through an independent channel. Changes requested close to shipment are the most common fraud pattern in this trade.
Documents that protect you
A written purchase agreement or invoice that specifies the category, composition, quantity by size, condition grade, packing, incoterm, payment milestones and inspection rights.
That document is what makes a later disagreement resolvable. Without it, a claim about what was agreed is a claim about memory, and memory is not evidence.

Buyer questions, answered
What payment terms are standard with Pakistani suppliers?
A deposit followed by a balance, usually against inspection or a shipping document. The specific percentages vary by supplier and relationship. For a new buyer, the deposit should be modest and the balance should be tied to verification.
Is a letter of credit worth it?
It offers strong protection in principle and adds cost, delay and documentation requirements in practice. For most buyers the combination of inspection and a documented milestone structure achieves most of the protection at a fraction of the effort.
How do I know the supplier received my payment?
Get written acknowledgement of the payment reference and amount from the company, sent from the company contact rather than from the individual who negotiated. A silence after a transfer is the point at which you must act quickly.
