How Much to Buy on Your First Clothing Lot
The direct answer: size the first lot from your expected sell-through, not from a number that sounds like a business. Multiply a realistic monthly sell-through by the months you can hold stock, add a small buffer, and cap the result at an amount you could lose without ending the business.
Part of the buyer journey: Start Small: First Business, First Lot, First Season — stage 5 of 8, with the other guides for this stage.
Start from a realistic monthly sell-through
Estimate how many of that product you can genuinely sell in a month, based on your channel size and your existing traffic, not on the optimistic case. If you sell on marketplaces, use your current order volume. If you sell locally, count the customers you already have.
Most first-time buyers overestimate this figure substantially, and the overestimation is the single biggest cause of stuck capital.
Cap it at your survivable loss
Decide the number that would hurt but not stop you, and do not exceed it. This is not timidity; it is the reason you will still be trading in six months to buy the second, better-informed lot.
If the arithmetic says the useful quantity is larger than your survivable loss, the answer is not to borrow. It is to reduce your selling period, ship faster, or sell the category through a channel with faster turn.
The supplier minimum is a constraint, not a target
Suppliers have minimum order quantities and those are real. But a minimum is the smallest amount they will accept, not the amount that suits you. Treat it as one input and negotiate on it: smaller first order, partial shipment, or a split delivery are all commonly available.
If a supplier will not move on the minimum for a new buyer, that tells you how they will treat you when something goes wrong, which is more useful information than the minimum itself.

Buyer questions, answered
Is there a minimum order quantity for clothing stocklots?
There is one at the supplier level and it varies by category and factory. Small mixed lots are more widely available than large single-category ones. Ask what the minimum is before you invest time negotiating anything else, because it may eliminate the lot entirely.
How long should stock sit before I reorder?
Reorder while you still have the previous lot selling, not when it is finished. If you only reorder when you are out, you will lose two to three weeks of sales each cycle, and in a seasonal category that can cost you the season.
Should I buy one category or several?
One category for a genuine first order, because it keeps sorting simple and learning focused. Several categories make sense only if they arrive pre-sorted and share a customer.
